Just don't scribe those planks too deep!
The Revell planking is grossly over-done. The Elco PTs had a mix of planked and plywood decks, often the subject of much controversy, and some were said to be fabric covered. The planks were laid close and tight, and are very hard to see in photos.
PT-109 definitely was planked though, as seen in a rare shot of the boat, attached. A series of photos was taken to illustrate how PTs were to be stowed as deck cargo on tankers, and the starring boat happened to be the most infamous PT of all.
This image comes from Frank Johnson's book, "United States PT Boats of WW2".

And, PLEEEEASE, don't put that big honkin' PT-109 decal on the bow. It was never there. The big bow numbers were only used in peacetime, and were only applied to a small number of PTs built before hostilities started...and even those boats had the numbers painted over before they were shipped out. My PT-41 is an example, and she only looked like this for a few weeks after she was launched.

Also check the May/June 2006 issue of Ships in Scale, I have a review of a number of switcher units.

Thanks,

Talking about an all-glass hull, or just laminating over the wood for water proofing?
For the latter, lightest I've done is 1/2 oz (!) cloth over 1/16" basswood (a PT boat, and yes it's light the way it should be!).
For all-glass, I think many of the builders use the same rules of thumb for small hulls as for 10 foot battleships. For the BB, the hull must work like a beam, especially when being handled out of water, supporting some 140 lbs... needs lots of glass.
Not such an issue for smaller (3 ft?) hulls... just look at any vac-formed ABS hull, and how flimsy it is before it's built up. But once decked over, and possibly braced internally, it's plenty strong enough.

I haven't built up an all glass light weight hull yet, but just look at hulls from Microglass to see how thin and fine they can get.

Hi Rocketman!

I see that "other" magazine on your main page... have you checked into Ships in Scale lately?
While it has been known for excellent static model ship coverage, we've recently expanded into more R/C than we had in the past. Between Kurt van Dahm, myself, and other contributors, we're running about 50% R/C... and a lot of the static stuff is of practical use and interest to the scale R/C modeler too.

Since November, we've covered the following R/C material (some in multipart articles, no light weight coverage here):
My Scale R/C Boats column, "On the Water", in every issue; includes event coverage, product news & reviews, tips;
Dumas Jersey City
Bluejacket's R/C lobster boat;
Great Lakes Scale Model Boat Show & Regatta
Legends' Century Thunderbolt
Gearboxes
2005 Foss Cup
Steamboat JM White
Smoke Unit
2005 USVMYG Regatta (schooners!)
Robbe Valdivia
Hartman Tug
Steamboats in PA
USS Montana
Estimating steamboat speed
St Louis Admirals Regatta

and more to come!

Any q's, please ask.
