I came across building another ATLAS 5-Ton Hydraulic Deck Crane in 1/32 scale. Although this one was from Harbor Models and was a little different than the Model Slipway kit I had built some time ago. This kit is now offered only by Harbor Models with laser cut plastic parts! No more of that tedious cutting of silk-screened plastic with a straight edge and knife. No more drilling of numerous tiny holes for hydraulic line holders. The plastic parts are cut to an accuracy of .001". Because of the laser cut plastic parts the construction has been simplified and is more efficient. The kit comes with numerous cast metal detail parts that include hydraulic pistons, a hook and hydraulic parts to include a control box with levers. The boom arms can be positioned to meet the modeler’s needs but they are not an RC function. I got the chance to build this kit for a fellow modeler. He had the kit sent to me from Harbor Models and I worked on assembling it as time allowed. It included two pages of typed directions for assembly, a parts list and three detailed assembly drawings. The kit included many metal detail parts, wire to construct the hydraulic lines, decals, a sheet of laser cut plastic parts, a photo of the finished crane and several feet of small black tubing used for the flexible part of the hydraulic lines. ![]() Assembly astarted with the base. ![]() After I built up the base, I added the Turret Tube. ![]() After the Turret Tube was glued in place, I added the cllumn cap. Note the marks on the cap that locate other parts. ![]() ![]() One thing to note is that the Turret Tube was warped in my kit. Before I glued it in place I tried to work out the warp and to try to bring it into a better shape. The final result still left me with a gap that I ended up filling with thick CA. ![]() After I filled the gap I started to add the webbing around the base of the Turret Tube. ![]() I cleaned up the Turret Bolt Rings with a brass brush and removed the mold marks. I then glued them in place on the Turret Tube. ![]() At this point I started to work on the booms. The included directions are very helpful in telling you what parts fit insde what parts. This is helpful in constructing the booms because the booms when finished slide into each other. The drawings are also very helpful in the assembly. ![]()
