Image Description
This is a Dumas Star Class 30. This model was built 25 years ago by Ralph Kanko of
Dayton, OH
, and it has not seen the light of day
for the last 24 years. ohmy.gif He took it out this summer, and the durable
polyurethane finish was as good as new; however, the original cotton
sails were a bit yellowed. He installed a new radio and has been
sailing it. He replaced the sails with some made from yellow ripstop
nylon--an improvement, but still not ideal. Next step is to make some
mylar sails.

Ralph recently built a sail drum winch for the sailboat using a Hitec 52
oz in servo, and a Bournes 10 turn pot-total cost was $20.00. Ralph
replaced the original Dumas ProBar winch that weighed 9+ ounces with
its controlling standard servo. It took some time to make the drum
and mounting, but it works great. It rotates 3 3/4 turns with the 5k,
ten-turn pot. This is the way to go if you need strong servo
operation in a model boat for a crane or other mechanism. The weight
ended up almost as much as a 1/4 scale servo (3.8 oz), but the winch
Ralph made has a stall force of 108 oz, and a throw of 11 inches. The
1/4 scale servo with a 4 inch arm would stall out at 48 oz with 8
inches of throw. Ralph added an endpoint adjustment pot to his 2 channel
transmitter since I only needed 9 inches of throw.
