For those who have elected to build the Dumas
kit, this is the only R/C kit available of the
USS CROCKETT.
A quick synopsis of the kit:
The USS CROCKETT, kit #1218 by Dumas Products, Inc.
was designed and released by Dumas in 1980,81. The kit is a 1/39th scale
"plank on frame" model of the USS Crockett, PG-88.
The Dumas model of the
Crockett is by no doubt, a builders boat. She measures
51" long with a 7" beam and features a hull that is
strip planked with 1/8 "x ½" balsa over a die-cut
mahogany frame, while the superstructure is a
conventional plywood box structure. For extra details,
Dumas offers a Deck Hardware Set #2105 that contains
more than 80 white cast metal fittings. Included in the
deck hardware are all the armaments needed to send your
ship into
battle. The Running Hardware
kit #2341 is the twin screw running hardware kit used to drive the Crockett. It
has everything needed to complete your drive line
except the motors. To power the Crockett, Dumas
suggests that you use two Dumas #2004 motors and
a 6 volt battery.
A 2 channel radio, speed control, two 6 volt
motors, battery and Running Hardware Set #2341 are required for R/C operation.
The Dumas kit #
1218 is a good kit to satisfy your wants for a Asheville
Class Gunboat. Although this kit is NOT
designed for the "beginning modeler", it can be build by a
modeler with modest building skills.
If you find yourself wanting to build this kit, the
"step-by-step" instructions that follow on this website will
be a major help in the assembly. If you have never
built an R/C model boat or aircraft in the past, I would
suggest that you first build a "less challenging" model like
the Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat or the
Cranberry Isle Lobsteryacht.
