PAINT
Dumas has recommended the use URETHANE OR EPOXY type paints. Depending
on the amount of detail, your paint quantities will differ from mine. Here are the
recommended colors:
Black, Grey, Olive Drab, Dull Orange, Red, Dark Red, Silver, White, Green
Roger's Notes:During the construction, I
did not use urethane or epoxy based paints. After the wood grain was sealed with
resin, I then used Testers Model Master paints for the color coats. These
paints are based on the same Federal Standard that the U.S. Military uses in their paint
colors.
If you plan to display your model, you will need Dumas Deck Hardware Kit
#2105. This is an optional deck hardware kit that contains more than 80 cast
fittings.

I purchased the kit from my
local hobby shop. Seems that Dumas has raised their kit prices. I was able
to get the kit for $124.95, saving me money over the new pricing. In order to
configure the kit for radio control, I had to shell out another $410.00 for the running
hardware, deck hardware, speed control, motors and battery. This is really a
"Big Boys" toy. :-)
After opening the kit, I inspected the
contents. Kit #1218 contained balsa and die-cut mahogany. The kit included
brass rod and steel 0.020 wire for the stanchions, small chain, wood dowels for the mast,
screws for the hatch and some other small items. My kit was complete and contained
high quality balsa and plywood.

Instructions: RATING 2
The kit included twelve pages of typed instructions. Also
included were two sheets of blue printed plans and a listing of additional need items to
complete the kit. The blue printed plans were very complete, showing diagrams for
the finished model and a few assembly diagrams. Construction details of the many
small lockers, mast, funnels, ladders and Bofors mount were very detailed. As for
the typed kit instructions, they were void of assembly pictures, only containing one
diagram showing the butt joint on the planks and referring to a few figures on the plans.
This kit was released in 1980-81 and were "industry standard" at that
time.
The lack of good instruction,
in my option keeps this kit out of the hands of the moderate modeler.
