  Super Detailing - The Mast

inv_spacer.gif (807 bytes)

I wanted to add working lights and a working radar scanner to my mast.  To do this, I made my mast from brass tubing soldered together.  The wires for the towing ang task lights are run inside the mast along with the shaft that turns the radar scanner.

At the very top of the mast you will find the radar scanner, radar scanner motor and the aircraft warning lights.  The warning lights are red, steady burn.  As for the radar, it rotates in a CLOCKWISE direction.   No matter if it's a high speed, or low speed, it still rotates CLOCKWISE!   The radar on my Crockett is set up to turn.

To power the radar scanner, I used an old servo.   I removed the stop inside the case to allow the servo to rotate a full 360°.   After that, I soldered leads to the motor to power it, this allows me to power the motor and bypass the the electronics inside the servo.  I powered my servo with a 1.5 volt AA battery.  This gives a good spin rate.  If the servo turns counter clockwise, just turn your battery around. I used lock and pile tape (Velcro) to attach the servo to the superstructure.  The servo turns a flex cable the runs up the side of the mast.  The radar scanner it glued to the shaft.

The pictures below show the AT-150/SRC antennas at the ends of the yardarms.  The AS-177A/UPX antennas, port and starboard are the gray round objects on the yardarm.   The mast also has two yardarm blinkers.  These lights can be used to signal other ships.  These are clear lights and blink on and off.

Underway the American flag is flown at the most highest point on the mast.  This is because I modeled the USS Crockett during a war time situation.   In port, the flag is flown on the Ensign Staff.
