P 250 Pump & Hose
Noting in the Dumas plans or directions ever
mention the P 250 pump. The Asheville class had two of these pumps on board. The P250 storage locker was just a square box, painted red (fire fighting gear);
with the dimensions being about 3x3 square. The pump itself was a motorcycle
engine encased in 1 inch tubing making the unit appear square. The
P-250 was a gasoline operated portable pump capable of sucking out and discharging 250 gal
per minute. Most valuable damage control tool on board. These pumps were used to pump out water in the event the ship were
ever to take on water. One of the P 250 pumps were located on the aft deck just
behind the outboard motor storage locker.

The crew stowed the P-250 trunk (hose) around
the turbine stack Again,
you have allot of digression as to where you want to put things, simply because we were a
little "pirate" Navy and standardization was not strictly enforced.

Smoke Generator
Noting in the Dumas plans or directions ever mention the smoke
generator. The Asheville class had one of these smoke generators on board. It was
mounted at the transom, port side. It had several nozzles (as opposed to nosnits)
with different sized apertures to control the amount of smoke it emitted. Although
it was on the Crockett, I have only found one time when it was used. This one occasion was
on the Crockett's entrance to the Song Bo De/Cua Lon. The Skipper may
have wanted to scare the shit out of Charlie by making him think it was gas.

I made my smoke generator from a wood dowel. I made the
straps and supports from styrene
Life Rings
The six life rings included in the deck hardware set
were in dire need of replacement. I used one ring from the PPR kit to cast the six
rings I needed for the USS Crockett.
