The Cabin

Steps #157 through #160 will explain to you how to bend the cabin sides with rubbing alcohol. Alcohol is used in these steps because it evaporates quickly, allowing the work to progress rapidly. Also, CA will bond to parts that are wet with alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is flammable! Do not use it near any open flame. Be sure also to have adequate ventilation.

If you do not wish to use alcohol for this purpose, hot water will work just as well. Steps #157 through #159 are to be completed while the wood is still wet.

Roger's Notes: Due to differences in the flexibility of wood, it may not be necessary to pre-bend the cabin sides, as covered in Steps #157 through #160. To make this determination, pull the cabin sides into contact with the deck edge. If they bend easily, ignore Steps #157 through #160.  For my kit, I had to bend them and to do this I used alcohol.

Soak the cabin sides by pressing them between paper towels soaked with alcohol.

When the cabin sides are soft enough to bend into position against the deck edge, fit them into the slot in F2. Cut shoring from the scrap of the diecut sheets. Wedge the shoring between the windows to force the cabin sides against the deck edge, as shown.

Use a razor saw to carefully cut a 3/32" wide slot about 1/4" deep in both sides of F2, as shown. Bend the cabin sides into the slots. Butt the notches in the front of the sides against the deck, at F1. Trim the back edge of the coamings to fit tightly against F4.

Roger's Notes: The cabin sides are to seat down into the slots in F2 so they are parallel to each other along their top edges, as shown. Also, the coaming portions of the cabin sides should be positioned as shown, so that their edges are relatively parallel to the deck. If necessary, deepen the slots in F2 to achieve these alignments.

Roger's Notes: When I went to align the cabin sides, I had to trim one side to allow for F2.
