Hull Construction

step.gif (1063 bytes)
Apply a final coat of primer. When dry, wet-sand the hull with #400 wet or dry sandpaper until it is smooth.

Later in construction, you will be using tools to install the running gear and radio. If a tool should slip while working on the inside of the hull, it could punch a hole in the bottom. To prevent this from happening, scraps of Micro-Glass cloth should be applied to the indicated areas on the inside of the hull, as shown, in the same manner that the cloth was applied to the outside of the hull.

While you are doing this, also waterproof the inside of the bottom sheeting, between F3, F4 and the transom. Resin can be applied to these areas by working through the elliptical holes in the subdeck with a small brush.

Roger's Notes:  Because I covered the inside bottom of my model with 1/8" lite plywood, I did not fiber glass the inside bottom of my hull.

Save any leftover scraps of Micro-Glass cloth. They will be needed later when you construct the rudder.

Using an X-Acto® knife, carefully trim the side sheeting nearly flush with the deck. Then, use a sanding block to trim the sheeting flush with the deck, as shown.

Roger's Notes:  The instruction tell you to trim the side sheeting flush with the stem, as shown at this time.   On my model, I sanded the stem flush with the deck.  A bit of a small change that will look good later in construction.

Fiberglassing The Hull

step.gif (1063 bytes)
Lightly sand the fiberglassed portions of the hull with #220 grit sandpaper, removing any high buildups of resin. Be careful not to sand through the fiberglass cloth.

Again, repeat Steps #119 through #122 to apply a second layer of Micro-Glass cloth over the first layer, do this to both halves of the hull.

Wet-sand the fiberglassed areas of the hull with #320 grit wet or dry sandpaper until the entire hull is smooth.

Spray a light coat of automotive primer on the fiberglassed portions of the hull. The primer will allow you to "see" the surface finish. Sand or fill any problem areas. Holes can be filled with vinyl spackle. Sand any filled areas smooth.
