KEEL
This Boothbay Lobsterboat
model uses a non· standard construction sequence.
Nevertheless, it is important that the keel be built straight,
flat and accurately. Otherwise, the following sub-assemblies
will not properly mate with it!
You will
need the parts as illustrated in your construction manual to
complete this sub-assembly. The stuffing box with the prop shaft
is in the hardware bag. The keel parts are in Bag Number One
(#1). The keel filler strip is in Bag Number Two (#2).
Lay a 36"
straight edge on edge against your building board. Move it
around the board and note any high or low spots. Use thin shims
made from scrap wood and placed under the board to correct any
irregularities. Also, sight across the board at eye level. Look
for any twists or bowing in the board. When you are finished,
your board should be flat. It is very important to ensure
that your building surface if straight and flat.
Lay the plan on the building
board so that the side view of the hull is completely on the
board. Then, cover the light blue shaded parts in the side view
on the plan with plastic wrap.
Lay K1 over the drawing of K1. Carefully align it
with the drawing. Hold it in position with t-pins, as shown.
Roger's Notes: Take note!
Do not attempt to push t-pins
through the parts, as this could cause the wood to split. It is
much easier to hold the parts in position as shown; by trapping
them with the t-pins, pressing against the parts and inserted
into the board at an angle.
