Hull Construction

Remove one of the mating main deck scrap sides from the die-cut sheet, as shown. Lightly sand the curved edge to remove any burrs. This edge will be used as a template to draw the curved plank lines.

Start by using a straight edge and pencil to draw the straight plank lines, in the same manner as the cockpit deck. Then, position the curved template so that it aligns with the outside set of dots that locate the outermost curved plank lines. After scribing this plank line, more the template to the next set of dots. Continue scribing the curved lines in the same manner as the first one.

After scribing all of the plank lines, the decks should be stained with light mahogany or teak wood stain, available at most hardware.

Roger's Notes: Bear in mind that care will have to be taken to avoid getting glue, resin, or paint on the stained decks, as this could ruin their finish. As a precaution, it would be wise to protect stained decks by covering them with strips of masking tape when applying resin or paint.

Also note that this is only but one of the many different ways that you can simulate the deck planking.  For a more scale model, I painted my decks.

Deck Planking

The cockpit and main decks of the model shown on the box top were finished to simulate natural wood. Although it would be somewhat unusual to see decks finished like this on the real boat (most decks are painted), it does have visual appeal and adds detail to the boat's appearance. If you wish to simulate natural wood decks on your model, the planking lines should be scribed at this point in construction, before the decks are installed.

Cockpit Deck & Hatch
To scribe the plank lines, measure the width of the lines shown on the plan and mark their locations on the cockpit deck with pencil dots. Align a straight edge on the pencil marks. Use a sharp pencil to scribe the planking lines. Apply light pressure to the pencil when drawing the first line. Then, re-trace the line using enough pressure to indent the line into the wood. Repeat this procedure to scribe the remaining lines.

Main Deck
Measure the location of the plank lines on the plan and mark their locations at various points on the main deck with pencil dots, as shown.
